  • 1 lb Ground Beef Substitute with ground turkey or chicken
  • 4 medium Potatoes Thinly sliced
  • 1 medium Onion Chopped, use yellow or white for milder taste
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder Or fresh garlic if preferred
  • 1 teaspoon Onion Powder Optional
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Adjust to taste
  • 1 teaspoon Black Pepper Adjust to taste
  • 1 can Cream of Mushroom Soup Or cream of chicken, or homemade roux
  • ½ cup Milk Any milk or plant-based alternative
  • 2 cups Cheddar Cheese Shredded, or substitute with Monterey Jack
  • 2 tablespoon Butter Melted, omit for lighter version
  • 1 teaspoon Paprika Optional garnish

Instructions

Preparation Steps

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • Slice the potatoes into thin rounds.
  • Cook the ground beef and chopped onion in a skillet over medium heat until browned, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Drain excess grease, then season with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  • Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish, followed by the beef mixture, and then the remaining potatoes.
  • Pour over the cream of mushroom soup mixed with milk.
  • Top with shredded cheese and drizzle melted butter over the top.
  • Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes, then uncover and bake for an additional 15 minutes.
  • Let it rest for 5-10 minutes before serving. Optionally garnish with paprika.

Notes

For added creaminess, consider more milk in the mixture. Can be made ahead and refrigerated.
